Recently, Dan Bongino used his podcast platform to suggest that Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) might have reason to be concerned about his political future. The following day, Bongino was appointed as deputy director of the FBI, sparking speculation that his comments were a veiled warning of potential trouble ahead for Schiff.

Bongino, a 50-year-old former Secret Service agent, made it clear that he has no intention of letting go of the controversy surrounding the unfounded Trump-Russia collusion narrative, which Schiff and other critics of Trump pushed during the former president’s first term. “I’m not moving on from this,” Bongino declared. “I want answers because this can’t be allowed to happen again. We had the FBI, the DOJ, congressional officials, foreign governments, and intelligence operatives all involved in crafting a fabricated story that could have severely damaged our international relations with a nuclear-armed adversary.”

Back in March 2017, Schiff, then a member of the House of Representatives, was a vocal advocate for investigating alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives. He claimed to have seen “more than circumstantial evidence” of collusion. Even after House Republicans, who held the majority at the time, closed the investigation, Schiff was among a small group of Democrats who released a 21-page report calling for the probe to continue.

The allegations that Trump’s campaign conspired with Russian sources to gather damaging information on Hillary Clinton were ultimately debunked in May 2023, when special counsel John Durham concluded there was no evidence to support the claims. Durham’s report criticized the FBI for its “lack of analytical rigor” in pursuing the baseless theory. For Bongino, however, the damage remains fresh.

“You can’t just fabricate a story, manipulate the justice system to lend credibility to a lie, and expect to get away with it,” Bongino said. “Why am I bringing this up now? Because who was the ringleader of that circus? Adam Schiff. And no, I’m not letting it go.”

On Sunday, Trump announced on Truth Social that Bongino would serve as Kash Patel’s second-in-command at the FBI, tasking the two staunch allies with addressing what Trump has long described as the weaponization of the Bureau against him. Trump’s grievances include the FBI’s 2022 raid on Mar-a-Lago, which was broadcast nationwide and left a lasting impression on the former president. The case tied to the raid was later dismissed.

Bongino, who spent over a decade in the Secret Service, has been a vocal critic of the agency, particularly in the wake of the July 2024 assassination attempt on Trump. His criticisms contributed to the resignation of the agency’s director and eventually its acting director, paving the way for Sean Curran, the longtime head of Trump’s personal security detail, to take the helm.

In his announcement, Trump praised Bongino for his relentless scrutiny of the Secret Service, noting that his keen eye for accountability would be invaluable in his new role. “Dan is a highly respected former Secret Service agent and one of the most successful podcasters in the country,” Trump wrote. “He’s willing to set that aside to serve our nation. Working alongside our new Attorney General, Pam Bondi, and Director Patel, Dan will help restore fairness, justice, and the rule of law to America—and quickly. Congratulations, Dan!”
